cross links randomly become footnotes

I was crosslinking terms in a glossary.
Editing an epub2 in Sigil. Everything worked as expected in Sigil and viewing the epub in calibre's reader.

Export to AZW3 with Kindlegen, view on PW-3, and most of the linked words are links that take me to that term, a few instead pop up footnotes.

Cannot see any difference between the code for ids or links.

Example: 3 entries below.
Viewed on Kindle, in boson the link for "fermion" is a footnote. The link for "Kozuch Theory" is a jump link.

Quote:

<p class="gloss"><a id="boson"></a><b>boson</b>. All elementary particles can be classified as either bosons or <a href="#fermion">fermions</a>; the bosons include photons and gluons. The quantum wave function for two or more identical bosons is unchanged if any two particles are swapped, and the wave function for a single boson is unchanged if the particle is rotated by 360 degrees. Bosons have a spin which is an integer multiple of the fundamental unit of angular momentum. In <a href="#KozuchTheory">Kozuch Theory</a>, all these properties arise from the topology of the particle’s wormhole.</p>

<p class="gloss"><a id="fermion"></a><b>fermion</b>. All elementary particles can be classified as either <a href="#boson">bosons</a> or fermions; the fermions include electrons and quarks, and composites of three quarks like protons and neutrons. The quantum wave function for two or more identical fermions reverses phase if any two particles are swapped; this leads to the Pauli exclusion principle, which gives a zero probability for two fermions being in exactly the same state. The wave function of a single fermion reverses phase if the particle is rotated by 360 degrees, and is only restored exactly by two full rotations. Fermions have a spin which is an odd-integer multiple of half the fundamental unit of angular momentum. In <a href="#KozuchTheory">Kozuch Theory</a>, all these properties arise from the topology of the particle’s wormhole.</p>

<p class="gloss"><a id="KozuchTheory"></a><b>Kozuch Theory</b>. A provisional unified theory of physics developed in the mid-twenty-first century. Kozuch Theory describes the universe as a ten-dimensional <a href="#fiberbundle">fiber bundle</a>; its size in six dimensions is sub-microscopic, so only the familiar four dimensions of space-time are immediately apparent. Particles such as electrons are actually the mouths of very narrow wormholes, an idea first suggested by the twentieth-century physicist John Wheeler. Renata Kozuch developed a model in which the properties of different particles are due to the different ways wormhole mouths can be connected in the six extra dimensions.</p>

Alignment and other Enhanced Typography options

Hi!

Amazon finally (FINALLY!!!) added the option to justify text.

Unfortunately, it seems there are exceptions...

What do I need to change/insert on an ePub book in order to make it support alignment?

Thanks.
Regards.

Centred and scaled image not centred or scaled

I'm placing an image on a promo page like this:

Code:

<div class="center">
    <img alt="ad-subs" src="../Images/ad-subs.jpg" class="img60"/>
</div>

the CSS:
Code:

.center {
    text-align: center;
    text-indent: 0;
}

.img60 {
    width: 60%;
    margin-left: 20%;
    margin-right: 20%;
}

The intention is to have the image-- 800 wide x 438 high -- in the middle, scaled to 60% of page width.
And that's what I see in Sigil, and Calibre in the ePub.
When I export to AZW3 and load on a PW3, what I see is an image that is about 8 cm wide on the 9cm wide screen, with a left margin of 2cm, cut off on the right side -- i.e. image is 90% of page width, off-centre.

It seems that the left margin is about 20% of the page width, but the image is not being scaled to 60%.

How can I fix this?

Bookmaker's rant

So....

I know this is a how-to forum, and all that. But there's no V&R thread for bookmakers, which has always surprised me a bit. Anyway...

Today, I recieved a PDF--made by a professional, mind you, a print layout person, using INDD--which has, wait for it....

Spoiler:
56 effing fonts.

And NO, I don't mean, 8 fonts with 48 variants, I mean, mother-of-God, 56 DIFFERENT Typefaces, and only Christ knows how many FONTS!

For the love of heaven! How the hell am I supposed to pull that miracle out of my :ears:? (Polite body part substituted for my usual).

I'm still gobsmacked.

Spoiler:

Nope, not kidding. And, btw, half of those have different fontfaces/variants, like AvenirNext Narrow, etc. I can't guess at the total final number; maybe 75? Hell, maybe 100?

Anyone here want to take bets on the chances of us ever getting that to work, in MOBI format? The odds? Howza 'bout, ZERO? Sweet Moses on a pony, trying to get SIX fonts to work in a book is a miracle. 56? FIFTY-SIX?

Not to mention, what are they going to say, when they see a KF7 version??????????????????

Sick of Kindle inconsistency

Sorry... this is going to be a cathartic rant, and I know there's no answer but here goes.

After trying again to get a nice, consistent way to put full-page images with captions (no, way embedded text on the image.. spit), I dabbled with the wonder of SVGs.
Lovely, works a treat in ePub, looks great on the new Kindle Previewer #3 works. Great, all happy. Read a little more because I was having trouble getting non full-height SVGs to work and say the line in the Kindle guidelines that enhanced formatting and iOS apps don't support SVGs.

{deep breath} Okay then... so WHY? WHY can't the iOS app support something that 's been in the rest of the Kindle range for YEARS?

There's GOT to be a good reason for this... but I just can't see one.

Are they TRYING to mess with us? SVGs would be a GODSEND and can help make lovely looking content, but not supporting on one platform cripples the rest.

:smack: :smack: :smack: :smack: :smack:

... or am I wrong? Someone PLEASE tell me that I'm wrong or today has just been a caffiene induced hallucinaton?

(Oh, and no gradients either????? Really????)

ePub3 to Mobi Error - Error(prcgen):E21027: Epub file has more than one opf file

Hi! This is my first post on this forum and was hoping to get an issue with my mobi conversion resolved. I continue to get this error when converting an ePub3 to Mobi via Kindlegen in Terminal:

Error(prcgen):E21027: Epub file has more than one opf file

I actually only have one opf file in the zipped ePub. The file passes validation just fine so I'm not sure where to begin. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Associate personal documents to Kindle store books

$

Hi all, my first post. I've registered expressly in these forums to know from some of you if what I need/want is possible.
I've searched the forums briefly but I didn't find what I was looking for and I think it is a very specific question anyway.

Currently I'm using the Amazon Kindle app for Android. I like it and possibly I will purchase more books from the Kindle store (and maybe also a Kindle itself) and stick to it for my future reading.
Now, in the past few years I've bought many drm-ed books from other places (e.g. Google Books and some other online stores) and I tried to add them to the Kindle cloud by putting them into Calibre, de-drmize them, convert them to mobi and then upload them as personal documents with the @kindle emails.
Despite some minor conversion defects (which I'd like to see solved) - such as margins/alignment getting screwed up at times - the books do show as personal documents in my Kindle app and the reading point is synced as well as highlights/notes.
So far, so good.

Now, this is the most important part to me, the highlights and the notes.
They get stored and synchronized in the Amazon cloud fine, but I've seen that the uploaded books aren't "linked" to their counterparts in the Kindle store, despite the ISBN and ASIN tags being set to the correct values (I've already read about ASIN, and experimented with mobi tags but with no success).
What I want is that if I upload a no-drm book as a personal document it gets linked to its corresponding Kindle store page, so that if I want to purchase it again from the Kindle store and then delete the document the attached highlights and notes are still stored in the purchased book.

Example:
- I upload Dune by Frank Herbert as a personal document (a previous purchase) by removing the drm in Calibre and then sending it to the @kindle email as mobi. I start reading it and add some highlights/notes.
- This Dune by Frank Herbert document gets associated to the Kindle store page for the book (I mean the book with that ISBN, that particular edition). One day I find that Amazon offers a very strong discount for the book, and I'd like to purchase the book again so not to have it as a personal document anymore but as a proper Amazon book.
- I purchase the book. Now I've got two entries for Dune by Frank Herbert in the app (or device): one is the personal document (the uploaded book), one is the newly-purchased book. If I open the new book - this is what I'd like to see - I find in it all the highlights and notes that I added to the personal document (and this because they are the same book).

All these problems may be summed up with a single question perhaps:
How does Amazon distinguish books when it comes to highlights/notes?
Does it use an ISBN (I'm quite sure it does not)? Does it use an ASIN (I don't think it does either)? Does it use a freshly-created id for the purchase? If so, I think I'm "doomed" and there's no way to achieve what I'd like to achieve here.

Thanks. I hope I made myself clear enough.

(And merry Christmas everybody)

Kindle Symbol font

In the 2018.1 revision of the Kindle Publishing Guidelines, the new “list of Kindle fonts that should not be embedded in eBooks” because they “are currently available on Kindle devices and applications” includes one font I cannot find any information about online, beyond the bare fact that it exists: “Kindle Symbol”. Does anyone know anything useful about this font?

Arabic KFX files DRM remover

hi guys,

Amazon started officially selling Arabic Kindle books on their website. I'm able to get the KFX file out of the phone to my laptop. I tried tools like

and it works for my English books but not arabic ones, it gives an error. Any tips?

Share button greyed-out; used Quality Check

Hey everybody!

I'm pretty new to the ebook experience and I have an epub version of a book that I converted in Calibre to AWZ3 and used Quality Check for appropiate ASIN. Any other Goodreads integration features work such as update progress, add to shelf and even Book description on Amazon. What doesn't work is the thing I wanted the most, which is Share feature to share passages from the book. It's still greyed out.

I don't know what goes wrong and I'd really appreciate your help.
Thanks!

Missing Kindle format documentation web pages

Oddly, the Amazon web pages for KindleGen and Kindle Format 8 that I have used in the past are no longer present. (At least for me.)

KindleGen: https://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html?docId=1000765211

Kindle Format 8 Overview: https://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html?docId=1000729511

I wonder whether this is a temporary problem or if it reflects an intentional change by Amazon to remove the more technical documentation related to building books for Kindle. Their emphasis these days is on Kindle Previewer 3 and Kindle Create.

can I format horizontal rules?

$

I'm creating a book that includes horizontal rules (i.e. the <hr> tag). The rules are visible in my book but they are faint and I'd like to make them more noticeable.

I've tried adding the following to the style sheet:
hr {height: 10px;}
but the formating seems to be ignored.

So my question is: has anyone succeeded in formatting horizontal rules in a kindle book, and if so, how?

Thanks.

Kindle Previewer 2.94 weird problem

I can open my ePubs in every form of "device" . . . except the one I want: Voyager.

Unless I go to the cover. That's the only "page" it'll show without hanging or crashing, but as soon as I go to the next text page, it hangs and eventually gives me the "internal error" message.

Had to put a new HDD in my MacBook, so got High Sierra and redownloaded and installed the apps . . . it used to work, now it doesn't :(

Any suggestions? I hate 3.2 so please don't suggest that :D

It's possible to add Word Wise to a personal ebook?

I understand that Amazon generates the Word Wise database for each ebook, is it possible to not upload the ebook .mobi to amazon and have Word Wise on custom ebooks?

link to cover?

Since the cover image in a Kindle edition is moshed into the book file during after both have been uploaded, it's not very accessible to the author when formatting the book. Is there some way to link to it within the text? I have occasion to talk about the cover image and would like to hotlink it.

Thank you!
