Mobi or KF8?

There's more css options for the KF8, but from what I've read, these don't work on the earlier Kindle models. So what I'm wondering, is if I create a KF8 file, does this mean it won't work on the early Kindles, or will they just format differently, leaving the advanced CSS out?
