Pop ups/Panels/Overlays

How can I create links within my ebook that will display an overlay/panel/pop-up on kf8? I was able to do this using <div> and css on ePub format but porting it with Kindle Previewer lost me those functions.

I was reading the new specifications for kf8 and it mentions side bars and call outs.

These books have to be reflowable, not fixed.

Can it be done? Thanks

Can I offer KF8 only files?

Hi all

Got a question about a title we are investigating. The print job relies heavily on colour images and some design features that means it seems a bit pointless putting on old Kindle devices. The time involved wouldn't be worth it (IMHO). However it would fine on Kindle Fire etc using KF8 files.

I know it is possible to unpack a .mobi file and separate out the old mobi and new KF8 files - is there anything stopping us offering the KF8 file for download, specifying that it is for colour Kindle devices only (which are obviously all KF8 compatible)? The file won't be selling on Amazon, it would be downloaded from either the client's website or ours.

thanks,
Iain

Removing Cover Image From MOBI File

Hello,

I was using KindleGen to convert ePub files to MOBI format, and I ended up having HUGE file sizes, meaning mucho dinero for Amazon in delivery fees. A 90,000 word book, for instance, with a 200KB cover image was generating a file on the Amazon product page listed at well over a meg.

Then I realized that in step 4 of the editing process on KDP one is asked to upload a cover image, and that it will be added to the book. But I had folks telling me in another forum that the cover image still needed to be in the MOBI file. I asked KDP about it, and around a year later (I exaggerate) they came back with this:

The cover image you upload in step 4 of the uploading process will automatically be added into your content. Therefore, there is no need to add the cover image within your .MOBI file too.

So that explains the huge file size, because in step 4 I was uploading a very high quality JPEG generated by Photoshop.

So I altered the OPF file and removed the image. KindleGen reported the error during the conversion, but it still left me with an apparent valid MOBI file that is now less than 500KB (part of that reduction is owed to me uploading a lower res cover image in step 4).

I wasn't able to find a lot of info on this subject, so I thought I'd post my experience here. And so far the final product appears just fine.

HTH someone.

Help with modifying MOBI file

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I left my warm lair at Kindle subforum and come here to ask for help.
I need to achieve some specific MOBI modifications and my level of Python-Fu prevents me to write it myself.

I have 500mb MOBI files created by KindleGen (Hybrid M7/KF8 headers) and I need:
  1. Remove Source header. To decrease file size ~50%.
  2. Change header field 501 to EBOK. To remove that ugly Personal tag on Kindle Paperwhite.
Currently I achieve both goals with modified KindleUnpack. It works correctly - KindleUnpack is awesome but it is way to slow with so big files. KindleStrip remove Source header much faster... but then I need to modify headers and I can't. All metadata editors I found fail due the fact they edit only first (M7) headers. KF8 headers are untouched.

I would be very gratefully for some Python snippets to edit that field 501 in both headers. Something slimer than parsing entire file like KindleUnpack. I need a scalpel and KindleUnpack is hammer :-) Patch to KindleStrip that set field 501 in both headers would be perfect.

Free candy to anybody who can help me.

formatting images for kindle hdx

hello everybody,

i'm just about to (try and) publish and i have only one big problem left. when i started the book, i made all the illustrations 640 wide as recommended. now i see they have a new high-res kindle hdx. i don't know anyone who has one, but on the kindle simulator it makes all my pictures quite small and pushes them to the left of the screen. (they're fine on kindle fire and my ipad)

i know word formats them small, but i have gone through them all and sized them 100% which helped a little. since i can't increase the size any more without ruining the quality, is there any way i can make this work?

many thanks

Need for a dual mobi metadata tweaker

$

Hi,
Okay in its own thread, the topic is to create a metadata tweaker that will work with dual mobis as created by kindlegen so that people can tweak the metadata but NOT split the mobi 7 and mobi 8 parts.

Right now it would need the following capability:

1) add EXTH 501 element with value EBOK to both headers so that cover display will work better for some devices

There also seems to be some interest in allowing a uuid style ASIN element to be changed to something else but I am not sure why this is needed for something that was a personal document since it would not be an exact match to any official ASIN from Amazon's catalog.

I did not think kindlegen even generated an ASIN field? Does it?

Hi I have some books here in the format of .mobi (some are in KF8) & .epub, as I know I need to decompile it first, then edit the css & compile it using kindlegen. that is just theory, now what tools can I use to decompile .mobi (some are in KF8) & .epub files ?, what command in windows cmd do I issue to compile the decompiled file ?

audio/video in mobi?

hi there,
I know that there have been different threads with the topic audio/video, but now the things getting real and I need some help.

we delivered a epub with audio to a customer two years agog and now the tell us that they would like to deliver it to amazon.
As I understand they deliver it via bookwire. bookwire has send them an error message from amazon:

"the audio has not been embedded according to our specifications..."

Please embed the audio according to that scheme:

Code:

<audio src="name.mp3" controls="true"  tabindex="0">
        <p class="Audio2" style="padding-left: 55px; width: 200px">
Your device does not support audio...
        </p>
    </audio>

Please see: AmazonKindlePublishingGuidelines.pdf
http://kindlegen.s3.amazonaws.com/Am...Guidelines.pdf
6 Audio and Video Guidelines

Now I tried the following:
- I changed the html-code to match it to amazons code.
- I moved the audio-files to a folder /audiovideo/
The epubs is fine and has no errors.

- I dropped it to the newest version of kindlepreviewer.
- I copied the resulting mobi to our Kindle Fire HD

Of course it did not work. I see the dummy-text: Your device does not support audio...

Did anyone ever produce a mobi with a working audio or video?

I even downloaded a preview book from Amazon with embedded video to our kinlde fire hd. But it does not play and says something like: cannot play...

Hi there,

I attached the error details. Thing is: I downloaded the book "Kontinuumsmechanik" and added it to calibre. Now I would like to send it to my tablet. When I click on "send to [...]" I get this error message.

I installed alf and it worked perfectly so far.

Thanks for any help!

##Simon

Hallo,

Danke!

KindleGen 2.9 and Send to Kindle

Hi,

Anybody have idea if it is possible to create MOBI with KindleGen 2.9 that don't lose cover during Send to Kindle e-mail conversion? No matter I do it have Amazon default cover on PW1/PW2.

Also I'm talking only about cover. Existence of Personal tag is not important. And I can't use Calibre in this case. Only KindleGen and manual header modifications.

Mobi2Mobi File types for Mobi2Mobi

So I've managed to open Mobi2Mobi (I have v012) but I'm still confused. The guide I've read on http://wiki.mobileread.com says it should convert .azw files, but the readme suggests only .mobi & .prc files.
How do I find the .mobi of an Amazon book? My only choices in My Kindle Library are Download to *** device; Clear furthest page read & Delete. I have the .azw, but Mobi2Mobi doesn't see it and it won't convert in calibre, so I don't really know what to do from here.

Adding an image to an HTML page Kindle Fixed layout

$

This discussion probably falls under HTML or css but I have a Kindle fixed layout template I was using and I want to take two logos create hyperlinks out of them, then place those two logos side by side. I cannot figure this out as I believe the images need to be inside their own div tags but every time I try to add a new div and name it in the css the images end up at the bottom of the page.

I have the .mobi file ( in the attached) with the page and the files that created the page in the link here

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/d8hqq0g1ygdhswh/95_JWRq-IP

and was hoping to get a pointer on how to do this.

thx

Weird page numbers in .mobi

$

Hi all!

It recently came to my attention, after having converted several .epub books into .mobi using the built in Kindlegen of Kindle Previewer, that the generated .mobi files, even though they look fine, exactly like their .epub counterparts, show a wacky page number.

For example, I convert a ~150 page .epub to .mobi, using the Kindle Previewer, and when I read it in the Previewer it shows something like 3000 pages and when you turn pages, the current page number increments randomly.

For the life of me I have no idea why this is happening, I have searched high and low on google about this and came up empty handed.
All my .epub files are created in Sigil and are passing the epub validator with no warnings or errors whatsoever.

Any ideas?
Thanks.

Can someone check this .mobi for me?

I have a Kindle Fixed layout .mobi which looks great in a browser and on a Kindle Fire and the Kindle Previewer.

But on pages that have images as links I see a blue line under each image link on both my Kindle Fire and Kindle Previewer but on a desktop viewing in a browser I do not see them.

Can someone have a look at this

see pages 5 39 and 40

thx

Hello,
I just got Kindle Fire HD and I'm trying to transfer a MOBI book that I downloaded. The problem is that I have some weird characters like ’ and –. I can see them both on Calibre and on Kindle, so I guess something is messed up with the MOBI file. Is there a way to fix it? Thanks!

Hi everyone,
I have some .bgl (babylon) dictionaries that I'd like to convert for my kindle pw. I tried to figure out the conversion process, but without any luck and this after I searched around on both forums and net. So it'd appear I'm a total newbie on the matter . I use win 7, by the way. Thanks for any help!
