How to convert mobi newspaper to mobi book?

$

One thing I hate about mobi newspapers is that one can't use landscape mode. You can use it in any standard book though. All newspaper-related Kindle's features are useless to me. That's why I want to convert mobi newspaper to mobi book, to be able to use landscape mode. How can I do that? I was trying to play with Calibre but that's a really weird piece of software and I couldn't achieve what I wanted.

Using Sigil, I converted my document to epub. I passed Flight Crew and the epub validator w/o any errors. After converter to mobi via the Previewer, I have noticed that any formatting dependent on my a CSS file is not appearing inthe ebook...no matter the device. I can apply the same style in-line and it formats the text correctly. Any ideas why it's not applying my CSS styles?

Hello!

I've a problem with Mobipocket Creator: I've tried to join several dictionaries in a unique one, but I succeded only with two. What must I do to join the other ones too?

(The dictionaries were previously unpacked using the "kindle unpack" plugin of calibre and trasformed in the html format)

Kindle Previewer is cutting off part of the number in my endnote <ol>.How can I increase the space between the left edge of the 'page' and the number generated by <ol> & <li>? Is this a problem inherent in the Previewer?

Thanks. Steve

Tables in DOC's converted from HTML scrolling only left & right

Hello

The situation looks like this.

I have a file, a book, which is just a website mirror DOC file, that was a HTML file, that I changed the extension to DOC.
The text in that file/on that website, unfortunately is in one table object, and I can't scroll down this table, only left and right.

Maybe I could write a suggestion of fixing it to the Amazon, maybe they don't know that there is such issue?

Or maybe there is easy solution to that?

Are there "flows" for Look Inside The Book?

On the KDP forum yesterday, there was a learned declaration about LITB and "flows". I read it and didn't understand it. I read it again this morning and again didn't understand it. I asked for an explanation and got this in reply:

Quote:

The way the Look Inside appears depends on the specific display document flow assigned to your book. There are several flows (Zon tech support wouldn't tell me how many). Some open on the title page. Some open on the cover. Some try to guess where the beginning is, based on the contents, and open there. This makes good sense, since we have a service where .e.g. graphic novels share space with textbooks, poetry, experimental literature and literary classics. No single display flow could possibly work for all these.

Among other things, the document flows differ as to the line spacing and paragraph spacing. Very often, especially if your book is laid out in some unusual manner, the rules-based AI the Zon uses to pick the correct display flow screws it up and guesses wrong. When that happens, an email to Zon support is normally sufficient to fix the problem of "my book is supposed to open in place X, but instead opens in place Y" or "my book looks fine in your kindle previewer, but the look inside is screwed up in the manner X, Y, Z".
I am somewhat less befogged, but not much. David Foster Wallace gets Flow X while Danielle Steel gets Flow Y? Hitch gets Flow Z?

Huh.

Any illumination gratefully received!

Previewer 3 removing custom font from some headings

My CSS sets <h1> headers to use an embedded font. The file works okay when converted from EPUB to MOBI via Kindlegen in both Kindle for Windows and Kindle Previewer 2.94 (and in EPUB readers), and almost works in Previewer 3.12—except the <h1> tags used for chapter headers display in the default font.

I’ve attached a boiled-down version of my file. Can anyone point me to what I’m doing wrong?

Android app to create Mobipocket(?) file please?

I plan to repurpose my old Kindle 4 to show lyrics in my band. I'll need to make files for the Kindle, and the most convenient method for me would be on my mobile then email the file to the Kindle.

Am I correct in thinking the file format I need to make is Mobipocket to be compatible with such an old eReader?

Can anyone recommend an Android app for this?

Kindle in Motion

There are just a few Kindle in Motion books available yet, and I think all of them are Amazon's own imprints. As a Prime subscriber, I have the seldom-exercised opportunity to get a freebie-of-the-month ($1.99 for everyone else). THE SKY BELOW was one such Kindle First and a Kindle in Motion. So I fetched it and began to read it last night.

I have to say that the graphics on this book are dazzling. I haven't checked it on my PaperWhite (which Susan has stolen from me and now regards as her own) but on the Fire tablet the color just leaps off the screen. (Kindles of course don't show color.) There's the occasional jet-black page with orange text, which if someone described to me I would likely grab for the vomit bucket, but thanks to the designer it does work, though with the obvious result that the black text on white pages that follow look pretty tame. I've seen only one bit of MOTION so far, and that was the author's prospective path up Mt Everest: I saw a graphic of the mountain, then a dotted red line marched up it like an ant on drugs, with his various base camps popping up as he marched. But it was so quick I almost missed it, and dang if I could get it to repeat so I could show it to Susan (as I sometimes do with particularly clever ads on the Fire).

But what impressed me most was the fact that images filled the width of the screen. THAT was great. Not to have that quarter-inch of white space at the margin really dressed up the page. (And once when the image was the summit of Everest with a breathless blue sky above it, filling the entire screen, with the text continuing on it as if it were a regular page.)

It's actually a pretty good book, given that it cost me nothing, so I will keep reading. But do I want my own books to start in motion? No. Nor do I want Jack Reacher nor Bernie Gunther to start springing across the screen...

Troubleshooting tips for azk file on iOS

I'm having trouble getting multiple iOS devices to display my azk file that I want to test. I've tested on 3 iOS devices running Kindle app 513.1, same results.

I'm starting with an ePub file.

Previewer makes MOBI fine. No errors preventing it from converting.

I can create the azk file with either Previewer 2.942 or 3.12.0. Same result.

Sideloading is fine. I get that.

When I try to view the book on multiple iOS devices it thinks for a bit then displays

Error
Please remove the book from your device and redownload it frmo your cloud items. If the problem persists, try to deregister your application and register it again.

Is there any good way to debug what is going on? That error is generic. I could try removing chapters one by one and see if anything changes. Erg.

Defeating Amazon's defeating of back matter

I mostly read and mostly write non-fiction, and I am one of those obsessives who want to read the endnotes. (The best academics often put funny stuff in the notes that they wouldn't dream of including in the text.) But as soon as I reach the endnotes or bibliography or postscript, Amazon tries to distract me with adverts for similar books.

So: I like to end a book with an advert of my own, for a related book of mine. I am afraid that Jeff Bezos over-rides this section. Do we have any notion of how he is able to interrupt the flow of the book? Is it done through keywords like Notes, Sources, Bibliography, Epilogue, so that if we avoid those triggers the book will continue with breaking for a word from the sponsor?

Thanks for any illumination!

PNG in AZW?

$

I have an epub2 with some png images. I used Sigils's kindlegen plugin (i.e., running Amazon's program) to make an AZW (not including mobi/kf7).

Looking at the resulting AZW in calibre's viewer, it indicates the images have been converted to either gif or jpegs, with some loss of quality and larger size.

So does AZW just not support PNG? I searched for a while, but I couldn't find a definitive statement.
I'm holding out a faint hope that it's an option but not default. A bit pathetic if Amazon doesn't support png 20 years after it was released.

Otherwise, back to making gifs.

Docs on Kindle Not Showing up on Amazon

I have several ebooks not purchased from Amazon that are on my Kindle Fire under Documents. I thought that these are supposed to also show up in Amazon under my content and devices but I don't see them listed.

Download Book from Amazon Doesn't Work

$

I'm posting this here because I'm thinking this has to do with a format issue. Using my Mac and Amazon's webpage, I download a purchased book. What is get is a file with a name that contains the book, but no file extension. At first I thought it was only happening to books with larger names, but that is not so, I found books with short names also with no file extension.

This does not happen on every book, some download with a file extension and everything's fine. This is happening way too often.

Ideas, please.

Unchangeable font

I have epubs that I edit in Sigil, then create an AZW using the kindlegen plugin, then sideload to my PW3.

I've noticed that some books the Kindle would not allow me to change the font: if I pulled up the font menu, I could select whatever I wanted, but the display did not change.

I stripped down the epub to try to work out the reason.
Eventually I got a to a stylesheet with one style:

Code:

p {
    font-family: sans-serif;
}

The above showed Ember. If I made it "serif" it showed Bookerly, regardless of my selection. I can change the size as normal.

Same behaviour if I had
Code:

body {
    font-family: sans-serif;
}

I attach the test epub.

But many other epubs I have use "font-family:", and the display font can be changed regardless.

Anyone can cast a light on what is going on and what triggers this behaviour?

I normally do put "font-family: serif;" in the body CSS as I found that otherwise if I had some text in an embedded font (e.g a Fraktur for a few words), and set "Publisher Font" on to see it, all other text became sans otherwise (ugh).

I really would prefer it if you could choose the "font unspecified" display font while leaving the explicitly set ones to show. But I don't see any prospect of that.

Want azw3 files instead of kfx

$

I have a Kindle Paperwhite.

I usually buy books through amazon and download them straight to my Kindle. Those used to be mostly azw or azw3 files. I do have some other e-books that in other formats: e-pub, pdf etc.

I also use Calibre with these book files. I like having backups of all my files, so I also back up all my azw, azw3, mobi, and e-pub files.

Recently I noticed that book files that used to be azw or azw3 files on my Kindle have turned into kfx files (I guess amazon replaced azw3 files with kfx files), which are utterly incompatible with Calibre.

I am not even sure if the kfx files are actually the books themselves, or merely links?

Reasearch showed that downloading book flles with Kindle Application 1.17.1 (not newer than that!) allows me to doenload all books as azw files. I can find these azw files in my Mac in the user/library/application support/kindle/my kindle content.

The problem is that these azw files have file names that don't show the book title as part of the file name, as azw files used to show. Howver, if I open such a weirdly named azw file in Calibre, Calibre does display the book title anyway.

But I want to make backups for my azw files, and if I don't see the book tiitle as part of the file name, it becomes a messy process. Can I edit the azw file name to include the book title in the file name, or will this cause problems?

mobi without ePub ...

$

A lot of my customers are asking for my books in mobi format. I am certainly willing to accommodate them, but ...

It seems that to create the mobi file with KindleGen, one must first create an ePub. I do not wish to do that.

Is there no other way to create a well-formed mobi, preferably from a single HTML5 file?

Producing new boldness slider in Mobi books

$

Converting from Mobi to AZW3 in Calibre does not create a book that will have the boldness slider. However, if you convert from Mobi to epub and then to AZW3, the boldness slider will appear in the resulting book. Just be sure when you're doing the last conversion, that epub is selected in the drop-down input menu in the conversion window.

And if you're buying a book from someone other than Amazon and an epub version is available, buy that and save a step.
